Summary
Welcome to the Arch Linux Newsletter. This document attempts to give you an "at a glance" look
at the world of Arch Linux.
Table Of Contents
Front Page News
- New Announcement Mailing List
We've added a new mailing list for special announcements in the same vein as front page news and forum
announcements.
http://archlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/arch-announce
This should be useful for anyone who doesn't frequent the forums or front page daily.
In addition, I will be CC-ing devland status reports to the list every Monday, for those of you interested in the developer
happenings.
Thanks,
Aaron
Devland
- New UK mirror: http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/ftp.archlinux.org/
- Eric Belanger and Eliott are away for a little while.
- Discussion has heated up regarding replacing CVS for maintaining packages. There was a prototype implementation of an svn repo http://archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-dev-public/2007-October/002308.html.
- Discussion also continues a lot around what packages should go into what repo. Most of the discussion stems from here: http://archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-dev-public/2007-October/002263.html.
- There have been lots of updates to packages in core. Search for signoff threads on arch-dev-public: http://archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-dev-public/2007-October/date.html.
- Andy mentioned that we should probably rebuild the core repo against the new glibc/gcc packages. Soon there will be lots of package updates for everyone to download: http://archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-dev-public/2007-October/002441.html.

FAQ
Q: What is this new [core] repository? and how is it different to what [current] was?
A: Some time ago, the developers team discussed a shuffling of the Arch Linux repository structure.
The new [core] repository will contain all essential packages for getting a system up and running.
In essence these packages are the core of Arch Linux.
Everything else from current that is non-essential has been moved to [extra].
Humor
- Peet came up with a very strange way to use the compiz-fusion technology, see it for yourself.
- Just for fun I asked the people in #archlinux to say something funny, so they could feature in this
newsletter humor section, this was what came out of it:
- rson451: something funny ;)
- jra: hi. I'm funny.
- bruenig: I can confirm jra's funnyness
