Just copy your /home and your /etc directory to a safe place and
reinstall your system. In the meantime you'll have a fresh install. When
you're done installing your system just put /home and /etc back in it's
place (maybe it smart to selectively copy files from your old /etc, so
you don't copy over the mess your previous system was).
When copying don't forget to keep permissions. Upon reinstalling make
sure your groupid and userid are the same as on your old system. The
tools supplied allow overriding the default "increment previous id".
