Hi,
I can't entirely remember what I did, I may have uninstalled and
reinstalled various font packages or fontconfig or X11 or something,
however, this link, seems to suggest it may be something to do with a
time error, in the font directory:

And claims that running this:
for dir in `/usr/share/fonts/X11 ...`
do
touch $dir
done
as root may fix it.
